Wilmcote’s iconic red telephone kiosk is getting a new lease of life thanks to the creativity and determination of 13-year-old resident - Rachel Bates.
When Rachel spotted the decommissioning notice on the listed phone box earlier this year, it sparked an idea. A keen reader, she imagined transforming it into a village library where residents could share and enjoy books together. After months of planning, Rachel approached the Parish Council with her proposal and received their full support.
“I’m a massive reader, and I wanted to create a place in the village I’ve called home for more than seven years where people could share their love of books,” said Rachel.
Parish Council Chairwoman, Councillor Lee, praised Rachel’s efforts:
“It is wonderful to see such initiative from a young person in our community. Rachel’s project is not only creative, but it will also provide a lasting benefit for residents of all ages.”
Rachel has committed to looking after the Book Swap, spending up to two hours each week maintaining it. She plans to keep the project running until she leaves home.
The Press and the Community are invited to celebrate the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, 4th October at 11:00 am on The Green, Aston Cantlow Road, Wilmcote, opposite the Mary Arden Inn CV37 9XJ
